LEAD TEACHING ARTIST AT VENICE ARTS: MEDIA-BASED ART CENTER 2018-2019
I taught an Art Discovery class to children 8-9 years old at Venice Arts, a nonprofit media-based education center. The class is designed with an emphasis on creativity, development of motor skills, knowledge in visual arts, and helps prepare them for Venice Arts’ program in media-based art making. Venice Arts serves mainly youths living in underrepresented communities, to create and share personal and community stories through photography, film, and multimedia. Students are introduced to artist works, folk tales, and short films such as The Lonely Goatherd - The Sound of Music, Russian folk tale Fox and Rabbit (1973) by Yuri Norstein, and Japanese folktale The Stonecutter (1960).
VISUAL ART TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIP AT SANTA MONICA ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL HOUSE (SMASH) I 2017-2019
During my time in the The Artists, Community, and Teaching (ACT): Teacher Credential Preparation Program, I served as a visual art teacher assistant at SMASH for two years. It is a K-8 public school serving around 250 students selected by lottery. Project-based/experiential learning and social skills development are the main approaches inside the classrooms.
I assisted all grade levels from K-8 in the visual arts classroom, planned arts-integrated lessons, collaborated with the lead visual art teacher Julianna Ostrovsky and classroom teachers, and incorporated varied art materials and instructional strategies appropriate to the skills, ages, and interests of students. I co-curated, designed and installed student’s work in District Wide exhibition with arts coordinator Marni Gittleman. These specific experiences led me to a commitment to ensure children of all backgrounds could attain a high level of art education experiences.
